Section A To have passed the Associate Teacher Diploma ABCA (TD)

Section B.  A Harmony and Counterpoint paper.

bulletHarmony 30 marks  Two questions will be set, requiring the harmonisation of a melody and a bass line in four parts for voices or orchestral instruments in short or open score as required.
bulletAccompaniment 20 marks  To write a bass accompaniment for the accordion to a given melody, or vice versa, as required.
bulletMelody 20 marks  To continue given melodic openings in an appropriate style to a length of not more than sixteen bars
bulletCounterpoint.  30 marks  To add a melodic line or lines above or below a given melody in free counterpoint in two or three parts as required
bulletTotal marks 100     Time allowed Three Hours

Section C A Principles of Teaching paper

bulletGeneral Principles and Psychology 40 marks
bulletTo answer questions of an advanced nature on the general principles and psychology of the accordion as a medium for serious music
bulletAccordion Technique 20 marks. 
bulletTo answer questions on the teaching go f the accordion technique up to concert standard, including questions on coupler registration, articulation and bellows control.
bulletInterpretation and Diploma Preparation 20 marks
bulletTo answer questions on the preparation of students for the College Diplomas LBCA and ABCA (TD), covering all aspects of the requirements with special attention to the art of interpretation.
bulletMusical Training 20 marks. 
bulletTo answer questions on the teaching of particular subjects related to the musical training of students i.e.  Playing at Sight, Aural Training, Transposition, Rudiments, Harmony, Counterpoint and Forms and Styles

Total Marks 100       Time allowed Three Hours

Section D.  A form and History paper.

bulletAnalysis 20 marks.
bulletTo make an harmonic and formal analysis of a given musical excerpt
bulletForms and Styles 50 marks 
bulletTwo essay questions will be set, requiring a knowledge of vocal and instrumental styles from the period 1600 to the present day.  Candidates may also be required to give thematic quotations as part of their answers a choice of questions wil be given.
bulletInstrumentation 30 marks. 
bulletTwo short essay questions will be set, requiring the knowledge of  The history and general characteristics of orchestral instruments and their families, the accordion and the related instruments, the piano, guitar and organ.  This growth and development of the orchestra and the scoring of orchestral and vocal works.

Total marks 100    Time allowed  Three hours

Section E   An Aural Dictation Examination

bulletTime Pattern 20 marks. 
bulletTo write a time pattern of moderate difficulty, up to eight bars in length in simple or compound time.  The test will be played melodically four times, but the time signature will not be stated
bulletMelody 20 marks 
bulletTo write a melody of up to eight bars in length, in a major or minor key in simple or compound time.  The key will be stated beforehand, and the tonic chord, followed by the test, will be played four times, the second and third repetitions will have breaks between the phrases.
bulletTwo Part Writing 20 marks
bulletTo write a two part exercise of up to four bars in length, which may include some auxiliary and passing notes.  The key will be stated beforehand, and the tonic chord followed by the test will be played five times.
bulletModulation 20 marks
bulletTo write the name of the second key, or its relationship to the first, in short passages modulating to closely related keys played in four part vocal style.  The name of the original key will be stated, and the tonic chord, followed by the test, will be played three times

Total marks 100     Time allowed 45 minutes.

Section F Practical Accordion Playing and Teaching

bulletTo play three octaves, ascending and descending, on both keyboards together.
bulletThe major scales of F, F#, G, Ab and A.  These will be required in similar and contrary motion and in 6ths in similar motion, commencing on the tonic in the right hand and the mediat in the left.
bulletIn similar motion and contrary motion, the harmonic minor scales of F, F# G, Ab and A
bulletIn similar motion only, the melodic minor scales of F, F#, G, Ab and A
bulletIn similar motion and contrary motion the chromatic scales beginning on F, F#, G, Ab and A
bulletIn similar motion and contrary motion, the major and minor arpeggios of F, F#. G. Ab and A and the Dominant and Diminished 7th, arpeggios having these five named notes as their root.

Pieces 60 marks

bulletTo play one piece selected from List A     20 marks
bulletTo Play two contrasting pieces selected from list B    20 marks
bulletat least one of the pieces chosen must be played from memory

Playing at Sight and Transposition 10 marks

bulletTo play a piece for both keyboards together, the bass being written on full chord notation without chord symbols.
bulletTo transpose, as required, not more than a tone up or down, simple pieces for both keyboards together.

Viva Voce 20 marks

bulletTo explain, discuss and demonstrate on the accordion details of technique and harmony, and aspects of Teaching and Performance as follows, and as selected by the examiners.
bulletQuestions on the teaching of music and explanation of methods of approach to problems arising in the teaching of Technique and Musicianship.
bulletTo discuss the form, harmonic and melodic analysis, performance difficulties and artistic interpretation of the pieces played by the candidate in section 2.
bulletTo answer questions on, and discuss matters relating to Phrasing, Articulation and Touch, Dynamics, Bellows Control and Interpretation.
bulletTo discuss Repertoire for all Grades and Diploma, and the teaching of Sight Reading Transposition Aural Training, Theory and Harmony.
