| Section A A General
Musical Knowledge Paper Harmony 30 marks
 | Two questions will be set, requiring the harmonisation of A a melody,
and B an un figured bass, in three or four parts. |
 | A knowledge of all kinds of triads their inversions, the chord of a
Dominant 7th. And its inversions, unessential notes and elementary
modulation, will be necessary |
 | Transcription 30 marks. To arrange for solo accordion, duo, trio
or quartet, as required, a given extract originally written for A
Pianoforte B voice and pianoforte C a melodic instrument and pianoforte. |
Form and Textures 25 marks Two questions will be set
 | A short essay requiring knowledge of form and textures including the
Baroque / Classical suite, instrumental forms and vocal forms from 1600 to
the present day with a choice of questions 15 marks |
 | A short piece or extract for formal analysis 10 marks. |
 | Accordion 15 marks |
 | Questions may be asked on the layout and possible pitch ranges of the
Stradella and Chromatic Free Bass systems, coupler registration for both
treble and bass keyboards, the writing of chords including Dominant and
Diminished 7ths and their resolutions, as applied to the Stradella bass
keyboard |
Total marks 100 Time allowed Three Hours
Section B A Principles of Teaching paper
Teaching Procedure and Psychology 30 marks.
 | To answer questions about the teaching procedure adopted for different
types of pupil, and the elements of Psychology as applied to Teaching. |
Accordion Technique and Musicianship 50 marks
 | To suggest remedies for common technical problems and to write
examples of suitable exercise material. To add fingering, coupler
registration, dynamics, phrasing and bellows indications to a given
extract, and to outline a method of approach regarding technique, phrasing
and interpretation. |
The Accordion and its Repertoire 20 marks
 | To show a knowledge of the varying technical demands of piano key,
chromatic and diatonic button key accordions. To show familiarity
with the standard accordion repertoire, including original works,
transcriptions, study books and tutors |
Total marks 100 Time allowed Two
Hours
Section C An Aural Dictation Examination.
Time Pattern 30 marks
 | To write the time pattern only of a melody up to eight bars in length,
in any Simple time. The test will be played four times on the treble
keyboard, but the time signature will not be stated. |
Melody 30 marks
 | To write a diatonic melody up to eight bars in length, in a major key
and in Simple time. The key will be stated beforehand, and the tonic
chord, followed by the test, will be played four times on the treble
keyboard. |
Intervals 20 marks
 | To write a series of four diatonic intervals played harmonically in a
major key. The key will not be stated beforehand and the tonic
chord, followed by the test, will be played five times on the treble
keyboard. |
Cadences 20 marks
 | To write the names and Roman numeral chord indication of cadences
played in root position one note on the bass keyboard and three notes on
the treble keyboard in major and minor keys. The tonic chord,
followed by each cadence, will be played three times, but the key will not
be named. |
Total marks 100 Time allowed 20 minutes.
Section D Practical Accordion Playing
1. Pieces 45 marks
 | To play one piece selected from list A 15 marks |
 | To play two contrasted pieces selected from list B
15 marks |
2. Playing at sight and Transposition 14 marks
 | To play and interpret correctly passages for the treble keyboard which
includes appoggiaturas, acciaccaturas, mordents, trill, turns, and
notational abbreviations. |
 | To transpose, as required, not more than a tone up or down, passages
on either keyboard. |
 | To play a piece for both keyboards together, the bass being written in
full chord notation without chord symbols. |
3 Viva Voce 40 marks
 | To explain, discuss and demonstrate on the accordion, details of
technique and harmony, and aspects of Teaching and Performance as follows,
and as selected by the examiner. A demonstration lesson maybe
required. |
 | To discuss the form, harmonic and melodic analysis, performance
difficulties and artistic interpretation of the pieces played by the
candidate in section 1 |
 | To answer questions on, and discuss, matters relating to Phrasing,
Articulation and Touch, Dynamics, Bellows control and interpretation. |
 | To discuss Repertoire for all Grades and Diploma, and the teaching of
Sight Reading, Transposition, Aural Training, Theory and Harmony. |
